City appoints Alderman Limberg as new Mayoral Committee Member for Energy

Cape Town: Mayor of the city Geordin Hill-Lewis has appointed Alderman Xanthea Limberg as the new Mayoral Committee Member for Energy sector of the city. Following his new appointment, Alderman Limburg will assume his duties on July 06, 2024 with Councillor van Reenen who will be serving the position until then.

As per the sources, Alderman Limberg joined the City Council in 2011. Earlier he served on the City’s Mayoral Committee in considerable portfolios that are responsible for informal settlements, water, waste and sanitation.

On the occasion of newly appointed Mayoral Committee Member for Energy sector, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said that Alderman Limberg previously occupied the Energy Mayco portfolio during the exploratory years of independent power procurement and the City’s battles against red tape in the regulatory environment.

Limberg is also linked to developments in the changing energy governance landscape as a city representative to the South African Local Government Association (Salga).

The city Mayor emphasised that as they enter the critical next phase of the Priority Programme to End Load-shedding he said, “I am confident that Alderman Limberg Brings a special vantage point to help oversee our plans for Cape Town’s transition to a dynamic, decentralised and energy economy.”

Mayor Hill-Lewis presented his gratitude and said, “My thanks to Councillor Beverley van Reenen for her work in this portfolio during the first phase of establishing our energy priority programme and I wish her all the best in her continued work serving residents as the Ward-25 Councillor.”

Alderman Xanthea Limberg is a member of the political party Democratic Alliance (DA). As a councillor she was assigned to a sub-council and served for both as elected ward councillors and as well as proportional representation (PR) councillors who are deployed by their political party.

As a Committee Member, she served on various committees of council and represented the interests of their communities across a broad range of sectors. Various committees made recommendations to Council and its structures regarding essential public service and other municipal issues.
