The City of Cape Town arranged ‘Learn to Swim’ Fun Day at Hanover Park. It consisted of approximately 90 participants from Parkfields Primary School that gathered at the Hanover Park Swimming Pool to celebrate their achievements at the ‘Learn to Swim’ Fun Day.
It showcased the skills that they have learned as part of the ongoing drowning prevention efforts of the City of Cape Town. The event brought together the students who had participated in the Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town ‘Learn-to-Swim’ programme, which was a joyful celebration of their hard work and dedication.
The participants demonstrated their newly acquired swimming skills and highlighted the importance of water safety as well as lifesaving abilities.

Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that this initiative is a key part of the basket of services by the Recreation and Parks Department.
According to Higham, the ‘Learn-to-Swim’ programme is more than about just teaching children how to swim – it is a critical component of the broader strategy for drowning prevention. Currently, a total of 36 ‘Learn-to-Swim’ programmes are taking place across Cape Town involving numerous municipal swimming pools.
“We are committed to provide opportunities like this one to empower our residents with the skills they need to stay safe in and around water, while also encouraging healthy lifestyles,” said Francine Higham.

Moreover, the local Ward Councillor for Ward-47 – Alderman Van der Rheede expressed that it is a privilege to see the success of these young swimmers and commended all who are involved for their dedication.
Rheede ensured every child in Hanover Park learns to swim is a cause close to my heart. He also encouraged schools and ECDs to get involved so that they can equip the children with the skills they need to thrive.
Notably, the ‘Learn-to-Swim’ programme is designed to help children in communities across the Cape Town gain access to essential swimming and water safety training. The programme equips participants with valuable skills and also helps to raise awareness about drowning prevention.
The event will serve as a reminder of the importance of the recreation services of the City of Cape Town, which plays an integral role in enhancing the quality of life for residents, also promoting an active lifestyle, safe and accessible facilities and fostering a sense of community pride too.
