City of Cape Town supports artists by establishing Emerging Artists Programme

Cape Town: The City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Department has established the Emerging Artists Programme. The programme supports talented artists in accessing art supplies, finding exhibition and studio space, and selling their work.

The initiative will help the emerging artists, based in Cape Town to have the access of opportunities that will help to promote their work and develop their profession.

Emerging Artists Programme is splits into two areas of opportunities in order to create sustainable and structured development opportunities for local emerging visual artists from previously disadvantaged circumstances.

People can access the two types of opportunities within the Emerging Artist Programme. The programme showcases local talent and create an opportunity for the artists to sell work, gain experience and exposure.

The Emerging Artist Programme exhibits the cultural spaces, creative institutions and events such as First Thursdays, FAME Week Africa and This is Art.

Mentorship and networks, skills development and capacity building training support opportunities to focus mainly over career planning and development.

The programme will also focus on marketing, promotions and social media strategies, dealing with the galleries and exhibition spaces. It will also manage the finances and fundings and legal basics for the artists.

Reportedly, masterclasses will be arranged which will bring together the artists, galleries and patrons of the arts to discuss and navigate the future as artists.

The Current exhibitions will be displayed under the title Mother City, guided by the curator Zimasile Mjokozeli at the 6 Spin Street Gallery in Cape Town. The timings for the exhibitions will be considered as from Tuesday to Friday the exhibition will be showcased from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Saturday it will displayed from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on Monday and Sunday the exhibition place will remain closed.

As per the sources, the Mother City will feature the work of 18 artists in different mediums by including two installations. The exhibition aims to uncover the intricate connection between the city’s environment and the creative process that encourages reflection on how artists will influence and are influenced by the city’s evolving identity.

The collection of artworks displayed will offer a contemplative space, while inviting the viewer to explore the dynamic relationship between artists and the city that fuels their creativity.

Exhibition can be joined by the under-resourced artists who are resided in Cape Town. Ideally, who are young and in the early stage of their career can join the exhibition.

The ones who are older and have decided to prioritise and refine the practice but have not yet established a solid reputation in the industry, can visit the exhibition.

People who have specialised training in their field of interest or work or have not necessarily gained at an academic institution, can see the exhibition.

Another ones who are at the beginning of their career and have created a modest independent body of work. The ones who lack in exposure and opportunities are also allowed to visit the exhibition.
