Cape Town: Urban Mobility Directorate of the City of Cape Town advised the residents and road users as well as businesses and the broader public of the rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive between Viking Way and Voortrekker Road in the Goodwood area on both the south and northbound carriageways.
Reportedly, the planned work by City of Cape Town began on Sept 30, 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by April 04, 2025, granted with all-weather permissions, considering no unforeseen delays. The road rehabilitation work will include:
- Milling and removal of existing pavement layers for the full width of roadway that includes shoulders.
- Recycling and stabilisation of existing layer works with cement.
- Also, placing asphalt surfaces.
- Reshaping the existing earth drains to allow free draining of water to the detention ponds.
- and, the Reinstatement of all road markings and reflective road studs removed during the process.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas said that the road and stormwater system in this area is in a very poor condition and needs rehabilitation and maintenance work to ensure that they prolong the longevity of the road network of City of Cape Town.
Quintas further expressed that he is proud that they are working on this project just as they are about to celebrate Transport Month, which intends to focus attention on the efforts to keep Capetonians continuously moving.
With the rehabilitation of roads, the Urban Mobility team ensure motorists that they can enjoy the improved road safety conditions. “I want to thank the public and road users for their patience and support over the next few months,” said Rob Quintas.
As per the reports, roadworks by nature is inconvenient but they will try their best to limit the impact. The team advised all to consider taking alternative routes, whenever possible. However, those who need to use the section of Jakes Gerwel Drive, are advised to adhere to all temporary road signs in the area.
Notably, the work areas will be demarcated on a daily basis to regulate the traffic flow through the affected areas, with possible lane closures while the reconstruction of the road is in process. Only one lane will be open to traffic in each direction during the work timings.
