Saint Lucia: The cricket team of West Indies played the first match at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground on June 17. They successfully defeated their opponent of the 40th match of the group stage, Afghanistan by a margin of over 100 runs.
The team, whose success is being celebrated all over the island, gave their best performances at Darren Sammy against Afghanistan. The Trinidadian player of the West Indies Men’s Team Nicholas Pooran emerged as the biggest threat to the Afghanistan men’s team.
He scored a humungous 98 runs off 57 deliveries and managed to secure the title of “man of the match.’ The other star performer of the tournament was Johnson Charles who came close to a half century with 43 runs in 27 deliveries.
The team’s bowling lineup also did wonders to support this victory, as they restricted their opponents to a score of 114. Notably, the Afghanistan team was bowled out by their opponents at during the 16th over of the match.
The West Indies men batted first and managed to give their opponents an impressive score of 218 to chase after. During their turn on the field, the Windies men did not make it easy for Afghanistan with a tight bowling.
The wickets also kept coming at a fairly regular interval, raising the spirits of not only the team, but also the fans at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium. The Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Ernest Hilaire highlighted that the stadium had been sold out to capacity before the match.
He also highlighted that the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground had been newly refurbished for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The Minister highlighted that the officials were delighted to report to him a sold out stadium for the match.
Dy PM Hilaire extended his support to the Windies men prior to the match. He also shared some images of himself and his team at the stadium.
He was proud to see the anticipation for the match between the West Indies men and Afghanistan in the turnup of admirers from all corners of the Caribbean and the world.
