Malawi: Police in Dedza District have arrested a 28-year-old on the suspicion of him being his spouse’s murderer. The suspect has been identified as Solomon Simango of Kanduna Village in Traditional Authority Kamenyagwaza.
The couple had been in a fight a few hours before the wife was found dead in the house. The neigbours who found the victim’s body believe that the suspect had killed his wife in his anger.
Some neighbours of the suspect gathered around his house and attacked him after they found the dead body of his wife. According to the community, they had taken the action as a retribution to his crime.
According to Dedza Police Station publicist Beatrice Jefitaa, the suspect Simango and his wife were drinking beer on Sunday at a certain place. At this point, while drinking they started arguing about the wife talking to other men.
The suspect, who was clearly in disagreement of his wife’s friendship with another man was arguing against it. Jefita said the argument continued until they got home where the husband started beating his wife.
Suspiciously, during morning hours of Monday, the wife was found lifeless in their house by the villagers.
The angry villagers mobilized themselves to pounce on the suspect. However, at this point, the police came in quickly and rescued him from the angry mob. The suspect has been arrested by the police and is currently in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, the body of the victim has been taken to the Dedza District Hospital and is awaiting postmortem examination. On the other hand, the suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer a murder charge leveled against him.
The deceased hailed from Thom Village in Traditional Authority Kasumbu in Dedza District.
Meanwhile, police in the district have urged residents to report family issues to the Victim Support Unit. They can also reached out to any police formation for counselling and assistance.
The murder may have happened while both the victim and suspect were under the influence. Meanwhile, the situation also points to constant marital problems which may have resulted in such a drastic end to the victim’s life.
