Dominica: The General Elections 2022, in its another unexpected turnout, is set to mark the maximum number of candidates, i.e. 45, in over a decade. Primarily, the elections are being conducted within the time-lapse of three years.
Additionally, the opposition party, UWP, has decided to back off from six constituencies which they consider to be the strongest bastions of the currently ruling Labour Party.
Considering this withdrawal, the number of candidates(45) still remains noteworthy. This is a positive development for the citizens of Dominica, who can get to choose the right candidate from numerous candidates for their constituency.
The fact that the voters can elect their representative from a wider list of candidates provides the citizens with a certain sense of freedom and the prevalence of democracy in the Commonwealth of Dominica. The majority of the constituencies have more than two candidates contesting the election.
In comparison with 2014, when the number of candidates was 44, a reduction of three candidates was noticed in the succeeding elections in 2019. In this aspect, the General elections in 2022 have been a breakthrough, with 45 candidates contesting for power.
