Dominica: Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development – Melissa Poponne-Skerrit has officially launched the 47th Independence Day celebrations under the theme ‘47 Years of Progress and Purpose’. The grand opening observed a cultural parade, attended by the Government officials, cultural leaders, corporate partners and citizens.
Dominica reflected on its journey, since Independence received in 1978. The address described it as a path marks the challenges and resilience. Despite of these difficult times, Dominica continues to emerge stronger, courageous and more determined than ever before. He reminded the citizens that nationhood is not built in one day, it is a product of sacrifice and hard work.
The opening ceremony highlighted the achievements that symbolise progress of Dominica, which includes:
- major infrastructure developments,
- resilient housing programs,
- expanded health facilities,
- investments in education, and
- construction of the highly anticipated International Airport
Skerrit stressed upon the true development and said that it must be driven by purpose, with people at the heart of every initiative. This progress must uplift every citizen of Dominica, especially the most vulnerable ones. He called on the citizens to view independence as a celebration of heritage and as a collective responsibility to build a stronger, more united nation.
The event emphasised the importance of partnerships observed between the government, citizens, private sector and communities in sustaining the national development. The Minister urged all to participate actively in the festivities, from parades and cultural shows to community gatherings, while embracing the national symbols, Creole traditions and patriotic spirit.
Furthermore, the nature island is entering in its two-month-long Independence season, considering the call to unity, reflection and celebration that stands clear. Dominica continues to chart its course towards a more prosperous and united future with resilience, purpose and faith.
