FAZ begins search for new players for national soccer team

FAZ governs and controls the Zambian national men’s and women’s teams which represents the country in international association football.

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has decided to go on a countrywide search to get new players for the national soccer team of the country.

Reportedly, an Executive Committee meeting was held on Friday, July 19, 2024 where the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) met to consider a recommendation by the Technical Committee. The meeting was arranged to hold a countrywide player selection exercise.

General Secretary FAZ – Reuben Kamanga said that the Executive Committee had adopted the proposal by the Technical Committee with the process, which is expected to commence soon.

Adding further to his statement, Kamanga said that the countrywide selection for male players will witness two streams of the teams which are converged in Lusaka for Southern, Lusaka, Central, Eastern and Western provinces. Whereas, the other batch will have Copperbelt, North Western, Northern, Luapula and Muchinga.

He further stated that the best players from the provincial teams will face off with each other with the best squad, who are selected to face the national team in an All Stars Versus the Rest format.

Kamanga also stated that the best from the select side may have a chance to be drafted in the national team set up of the FAZ.

FAZ which stands for Football Association of Zambia, is the governing body of association football in Zambia. The association was founded back in 1929 and was based at the ‘Football House’ on Alick Nkhata Road in Lusaka, which is the capital of the country.

Notably, the football association governs and controls the Zambian national men’s and women’s teams which represents the country in international association football.

The national team of men became popular during the 1980s as the ‘KK-11’ after Dr. Kenneth Kaunda (KK), who is the founder of Zambia, was its president from independence in 1964 until the shift to a democratic multiparty state in the year 1991, when it changed its nicknames to Chipolopolo or the ‘Copper Bullets’.

The Zambian national team has appeared in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations thrice, and won it once, against the Ivory Coast.
