Flooded river claims life of father-daughter

A father and his eight-year-old daughter swept away by a flooded river and died, in the Sanyati District, last Saturday.

Sanyati, Zimbabwe: A father and his eight-year-old daughter were swept away by a flooded river and died. Both father and daughter were killed after being swept away by a flooded river in the Sanyati District last Saturday.

As per the sources, the loss of two young lives in the local area because of extremely heavy rainfall and rising water levels led to another incident. Five family members were marooned in the Sanyati River on Friday.

Although the rescue team reached the spot timely and with their great efforts they were successful in saving the family members.

Considering the recently occurred unfortunate incident, National Police Spokesperson and Assistant Commissioner – Paul Nyati said that the father died while trying to save his daughter from drowning.

Assistant Commissioner Nyati mentioned that they had a sad incident which happened in Sanyati yesterday where two juveniles were sent by their parents to go and fetch firewood.

Paul Nyati stated that afterwards, the juveniles decided to rest while putting their legs in a water stream, and the soil gave in, leading to the 8-year-old being swept away.

Another 12-year-old child ran to call her father and to save the 8-year-old child. After this, the father swept away with the little girl in the river.

The police spokesperson Paul Nyati narrated, “The 12-year-old went on to call her father, and when he came and tried to rescue the child, unfortunately, he was also swept away. As the Police, we implore parents to take good care of their children.”

Reportedly, Provincial Civil Protection Unit (CPU) Director – Cecilia Chitiyo confirmed that all forces and arms had been activated to respond to any kind of climate happening. She declared that officials had also been activated and given responsibilities to react to the violent weather patterns.

At present, Sanyati District is receiving heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, which is raising the water level in the rivers and leading to flooded brooks.
