Botswana: Gaborone City Council (GCC) conducted a 3-day workshop for Caregivers of Orphans. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Department of Social and Community Development.
The workshop was hosted for the stakeholders who recently went for a Grief and loss retreat camp which was hosted at Motlhabaneng. The Gaborone City Council shared glimpses of the three-day workshop.
The workshop aimed to allow caregivers to express themselves and support them in the challenges they face while raising orphans. The Gaborone City Council has been working hard to support and train the caregivers who have been entrusted with the responsibility of caring for orphans
The Caregivers workshop is meant to share information from different stakeholders on the relevant strategies to implement in helping orphans deal with their grief. The guardians participated in interactive activities where they were expected to outline the challenges they faced.
The caregivers were also allowed to ask for the support they needed to overcome their grief. The people of the country were sharing their appreciation for the efforts of the Gaborone City Council.
The Council Attorney of the Gaborone City Council Oneile Modukanele delivered brief remarks at the workshop. During his presentation, Council Attorney Oneile Modukanele noted that one of the challenges orphans face is being denied access to their benefits.
He further explained about writing a will and its importance to both the spouse and child of the departed souls. He outlined that no child should be deprived of their right in the absence of one or both of their parents be it land or money.
The Chief Social and Community Development Officer Segopotso Dikai was thankful to the caregivers as they came up with an initiative to continue with support as they have formed a cohort of their own. She was delighted the work that they were doing was bearing fruit.
In closing, Councillor Amogelang Phologolo urged Caregivers to keep up the good work of raising intelligent and wonderful children.
