Botswana: Gaborone City Council (GCC) and Kweneng District Council (KDC) executives met at Gamodubu Landfill. The officials from both the district administration manage the landfill in a collaborative effort.
The meeting, which happened on Thursday, sought to find lasting solution to challenges that the site has been struggling with. The landfill has served as a site for the people to dispose off their waste and keep the communities clean.

Further, the officials toured the sight to manage the was also meant to appreciate the regional landfill. They wanted to be able to understand the challenges faced by officers and .waste collection contractors.
During the tour Town Clerk for Gaborone Lopang Pule said City Council has observed an increase in breakdown of waste collection trucks. He noted that the reason for the breakdown may be due to the situation at the landfill.
Pule pointed out that some of the contractors who fail to meet their waste collection schedule has attributed their predicament to the situation at the landfill. He emphasized that it is imperative for GCC to strengthen their working relations with KDC.
This way they can successfully find ways to curb challenges at the landfill and improve waste collection turn around time.
Pule urged the KDC team to act promptly and communicate when they are faced with challenges at the landfill in order to manage waste collection issue well on time.
For his part Kweneng District Council Secretary Olebile K. Mafala said that the landfill is their major source of revenue but most of that revenue goes back to the maintenance of the landfill. Mafala acknowledged that about 62% of the waste disposed at the landfill is from Gaborone and when the landfill is none functional, GCC takes a bigger hit.
He said KDC is considering outsourcing the landfill to ease its operation and maintenance. Mafala noted that most of the challenges faced by the landfill are due to lack of proper equipment and personnel as they run with minimum machinery.
