Cape Town: Families of Kalkfontein acknowledged the City of Cape Town for No Cost Transfer programme on becoming homeowners.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis along with the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim visited the community of Kalkfontein in Kuils River to distribute the title deeds to families residing in Council Rental Units as a part of the campaign by City of Cape Town to accelerate title deed delivery.
The families were overjoyed to become the home owners without the burden of any costs. They extended gratitude to the innovative No Cost Transfer programme of the City of Cape Town.

Considering this, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said that it was a moving occasion to hand over the homes and truly empower these families living in the City rental units in Kalkfontein. Residents, who have received their title deeds today are among many of those who will become first time home owners over the coming months.
Lewis said that it is transformative for families and future generations, as they believe strongly that in the power of home ownership to break the cycle of poverty in South Africa. Cape Town is the government of home ownership.
“We take pride in creating new homeowners through our programmes. With each new home owner, we are redressing the past and changing the lives of these families for better,” added Hill-Lewis.
MMC for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim stated that the Human Settlements Directorate is committed to land reform that works and creates more homeowners and less state tenants.
Pophaim explained that they are committed to the goal of instilling dignity in the communities through every title deed they hand over. According to Carl, it is always meaningful to celebrate with families as they receive their deeds.

This decision is an essence of the delivery efforts and initiatives. A home and deed open doors to opportunities and advancements for many generations to come.
Residents in the City have been unambiguous that there is no need for expropriation of land without compensation but a change in priorities from the state to give ownership to the many beneficiaries awaiting government action.
“We are excited to keep assisting the residents in becoming homeowners and will accelerate activities in the coming year,” expressed Councillor Pophaim.
Concluding the day, the 48-year-old title deed recipient – Gertruida Peter said, “I feel very proud on officially becoming the owner of the house, thanks to the No Cost Transfer programme of the City of Cape Town.”
Another new homeowner – Nompuneko Linganiso, aged 65 said, “I feel very happy to become the owner and no longer a tenant. Our family is very grateful for the support in covering costs to take ownership of the home.”
