Malawi: The Lilongwe chapter of Sons and Daughters of Kasungu donated three wheelchairs to Kasungu District Hospital. The donation was handed over to the hospital on Tuesday with the aim of easing mobility of patients in the facility.

Charles Joseph Nyirenda who serves as the chairperson of the group revealed that the donation is a proof of the group’s objective to assist the people. They are working towards responding to various challenges being faced in the communities.

“Kasungu District Hospital is a historical facility for us as sons and daughters with roots in Kasungu District. Some of us were born here and some have their parents still living in the district and are getting medical help at this hospital.

“We understand there are many challenges in the communities and it will take the effort of each and every individual to lessen or deal with them,” Nyirenda said.

The Matron for the hospital, Doris Mwafulirwa expressed gratitude for the wheelchairs that they received for the patients. She claimed that the donation was extremely important in the hospital operations.

Mwafulirwa said: “As a facility, we are very thankful to the group for giving us the wheelchairs. These are important assets in the functions of the hospital in the sense that they aid in the mobility of patients.

She highlighted that the donation was crucial for them and called on the wellwishers of the community to continue their support. The matron further acknowledged that while government is doing its part, it cannot provide everything.

This is because the population keeps increasing on daily basis. In line with the thought, she took the opportunity to call upon well-wishers to not forget hospitals while they are making donations

The group conducted a cleaning exercise on the day of the donation. They also cheered patients in the children’s ward of the hospital. For the ward, they donated assorted grocery items including sugar, cooking oil, flour and soap worth K2.5 million.

Sons and Daughters of Kasungu was established in 2023 with an aim of assisting one another in times of need and mobilising various kinds of assistance to respond to community needs.

Kasungu District Hospital was built in 1968 and serves a population of about a million people.
