Kenya: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) – Capt. William Ruto held talks with Sea Sands Shipping LLC firm on Friday, May 15, 2026. The meeting aimed at strengthening bilateral relations in the logistics industry and expanding maritime cooperation.
During the engagement, Capt. Ruto encouraged more international liners to utilise the Ports of Mombasa and Lamu, as citing improved operational efficiency, faster turnaround times and their strategic positioning along key global shipping routes. He said that this country presents immense opportunities for liners to invest and tap into the existing ready market through the Port of Mombasa, which serves as a regional logistics hub.
Ruto also highlighted the Authority’s strategic plan, pointing towards the ongoing port expansion projects that is focused on increasing berth capacity, by expanding yard space and enhancing digital systems. He said that the initiatives are aimed at boosting efficiency, by facilitating trade and reinforcing Kenya’s position as a leading maritime gateway in the region.
Furthermore, Sea Sands Shipping announced plans to roll out feeder services and expand its operations in the East African region during the engagement. The move is expected to open-up new logistics corridors linking Kenya to inland markets and boost regional trade connectivity.
The company’s Strategy Consultant – Capt. Adnan Ahmad, said that the group has already expanded its business into Kenya through the commencement of non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC) operations under its subsidiary, Hikaru Line.
According to Ahmad, the group is making further investments to establish a logistics corridor in East Africa connecting Kenya to the hinterlands, by generating local jobs and contributing to the Kenyan economy.
The announcement came amidst growing interest by international liners in tapping into regional supply chains. Some of these investments are expected to focus on intermodal linkages, warehousing and inland distribution networks. The talks came as KPA steps-up engagement with global shipping players in efforts to grow cargo volumes, improve service delivery and secure new partnerships within an increasingly competitive maritime landscape.
