Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) hosted a delegation from the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) at its Mombasa headquarters. The visitors at Kenya lauded the remarkable growth and operational achievements of KPA.
On behalf of the Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, General Manager of Cargo Operations – Dr. Sudi Mwasinago received the delegation.
Capt. Ruto highlighted the impressive performance of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and noted increase of 14.1% in cargo throughput in 2024. The Port of Mombasa handled 41.1 million tons, up from 35.98 million tons in 2023.
Dr. Sudi Mwasinago saw growth, that reflected commitment of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to operational efficiency, innovation and the role in facilitating regional trade. He said it is ongoing efforts to enhance capacity, especially at the Port of Lamu, as it is opening doors to graeter economic opportunities.
Considering this, Chairman of NBA Board – Prof. Jenesio Kinyamario commended KPA for establishing itself as a regional trade hub. He specifically pointed out the promising potential of the Port of Lamu, citing its recent back-to-back trans-shipment vessels as a sign of its strategic importance.
Kinyamario acknowledged that the visit to KPA was really enlightening. The growth underscored the critical role of the port in supporting Kenya’s economy and the entire East African region.
The NBA Board delegation included Board of Director – Mohammed Haji Hussein and Acting CEO – Mr. Nehemiah Ngetich, who toured KPA’s facilities to learn about its operations and innovations.
Moreover, the National Biosafety Authority was established under the Biosafety Act of 2009. It oversee the development, transfer and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to ensure safety for human health, animals and the environment.
Its key functions are to conduct risk assessments, enforce biosafety standards and promote public awareness. NBA’s Acting CEO emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving shared objectives.
The engagements established in NBA, provides valuable insights into how they can align the efforts to ensure safety and sustainability while supporting development goals of Kenya.
Notably, the visit concluded with both institutions re-affirming their commitment towards collaboration for national development and sustainability.
The meeting also welcomed KPA Maangers – Mr. Paul Bor (ICDs) and Mr. Ali Mwambire (Conventional Cargo Operations).
