Kenya: A meeting was conducted by the Commander of the Kenya Navy Base at Mtongwe – Brigadier Abraham Biwott with the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director – Capt. William Ruto. It held the discussions which were majorly focused on preparations for the upcoming 60th anniversary of Kenya Navy Day, which is scheduled for December 14, 2024.
During the meeting, Brigadier Biwot outlined the planned community engagement initiatives, that included healthcare camps, along with community walks, tree planting campaigns and also involved the efforts to address oil spill mitigation.
On his part, Capt. Ruto recognized the Kenyan Navy as a vital partner and expressed the interest in collaborative projects between the two organizations.
Notably, Kenya Navy Day is celebrated annually on December 15 and marks the establishments of the Kenya Navy and honors its accomplishments. The meeting was joined by the General Manager Cargo Operations – Dr. Sudi Mwasinago, Chief of Naval Medical Services of Kenya Navy – Brigadier Justino Muinde and several senior military officials were present during the meeting.
Kenya Navy is the naval branch of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). It was established on December 12, 1964, just after one year Kenya gained the independence.
Some important things to note about Kenya Navy is that it’s headquarter is in Mombasa. It has several bases that includes Mtongwe in Mombasa, Shimoni, Msambweni, Malindi, Kilifi and Manda.
Moreover, the Kenya Navy’s fleet is divided into two fighting squadrons and a logistical support squadron. It also consists of Special Operations Squadron, a Fleet Maintenance Unit and an elite Marine Ranger Regiment.
KDF Day is a significant observance in the Kenyan Military calendar. It’s a day to honor the sacrifices of KDF members and to celebrate their valor.
Last year, in 2023, 59th edition of the Kenya Navy Day was celebrated. It was flair and glam as Kenya Navy Sailors at Lieutenant Colonel Kimaro grounds, in the festivity who dedicated it to men and women who navigate the nation’s waters ensuring its maritime security.
The annual Navy Day celebration encapsulates the achievements of Kenya Navy and showcased its vital role in safeguarding the maritime interests of Kenya. The commemoration of the day traces back to the establishment of the Kenya Navy emphasizing the importance of maritime security within the Western Indian Ocean.
