The National Paralympic Games trials held at the Kiprugut Chumo Stadium concluded yesterday in Paris, France. The Kericho County team has marked remarkable performances and secured victory in several sports categories.
The County District Fred Kirui honoured and congratulated players for remarkable performances.
As per the authorities, the result of the event was outstanding. The participants have played exceptionally well. Some of them were also enlisted to play at the Paris Paralympic Games 2024 next year.
The World Paralympic 1500m champion, Nancy Chelangat from Kalyet village in Kipkelion West, clocked 5:19:14 to win the T11 category.
Earlier this year, she posted a time of 4:46:55 to clinch gold at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, France.
During the closing ceremony of the two-day national event, Deputy Governor Fredrick Kirui congratulated the participants for the good display of sharpened and progressive sports talents.
The district governor, other dignitaries, and top government officials appealed to the national government to partner closely with counties. They also appealed to them to open up more space for developing Paralympic Sports at the grassroots level.
These delegations include the President of the Kenya National Paralympic Committee(KNPC), Ronald Milare, Education CECM, Judith Chirchir, Chief Officers Geoffrey Bett (Sports), and Richard Tonui(Education).
Reportedly, The National Paralympic Games two-day trial was officially flagged off by the President of Kenya National Paralympic Committee (KNPC), Ronald Milare and Kericho County Secretary and Head of Public Service, Dr. Wesley Bor.
Before the match, Dr Mutai Erick Kipkoech, the Cabinet Secretary, assured the participants of the government’s commitment to ensuring the event was held in a safe and secure environment. He also assured all measures had been implemented to facilitate a successful event.
The KNPC Chair, Milare, on his part, thanked the County Government of Kericho for accepting the hosting of such a high-level national event. He also noted that the meeting was a pathway to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
