Kenya Ports Authority Basketball teams had mixed fortunes at Makande Gymnasium over the weekend as the race for the basketball premiership continued. The KPA Men played against their arch-rivals, the Nairobi City Thunder. It was a thrilling match that created a ‘do or die’ situation for the two basketball powerhouses as hundreds of fans thronged the venue to witness the action.
The Docker- Men fought hard, but Thunder overpowered them, setting the pace early with a 23-15 first-quarter lead. Despite their first-quarter setback, the Dockers pushed on and mounted a spirited challenge in the second quarter. Then they narrowly loss to Thunder by one basket, with scores of 39-37.
While covering that, by the time the boys were back for the second half. The Thunder then pulled away taking control of the game and eventually outwitting the Dockers 85-71, to the dismay of Dockers fans who had turned out in large numbers to cheer them on.
Considering the results, the Dockers will now regroup, draw lessons from the setback and return determined to continue fighting for the title.
The men’s side endured a difficult evening, the weekend could not have gone better for the KPA Ladies Dockers. As they continued to stamp their authority during the playoffs with two dominant performances.
The women’s team opened with an 82-34 victory over The Swish on Saturday. They controlled the match from the very beginning. Then coming to Sunday morning, the defending champions replicated the good performance with a decisive 102-46 win against The Dream Girls.
The basketball ladies established their dominance early against The Dream Girls, leading 31-15 after the first quarter. They extended that advantage to 30-9 in the second quarter and maintained control through the remainder of the game, by winning the third quarter 18-13 and the fourth 23-9.
With an outstanding all-round performance, the defending champions showed their resilience and determination. They stayed at the top of the league table as the title race intensifies.
