South Africa: A tornado passed the Tongaat area of KwaZulu Natal causing significant damage to the property and life in the community. The Tornado, which has destroyed over 1200 houses in the area has caused disruption in the education of the students in the city.

In response to the destruction, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has provided Seatides Combined School with mobile classrooms and ablution facilities. The officials have shared that the handover was done to support the rebuilding of the city’s education infrastructure.

On Sunday, the DDG responsible for Institutional Development Support (IDS), Weziwe Hadebe, led a team of officers to the city. The team was appointed to ensure that everything is in order ahead of the resumption of classes.

They addressed a short yet significant meeting to report back on various infrastructure challenges and developments in Tongaat. They discussed the various ways in which the officials can support the redevelopment and recovery of the city after the major tornado

Among the matters discussed, some key topics mentioned were flushable toilets, water tanks, electricity, fencing, equipment, and site clearing. The department is working hard to make sure that all the teachers and stakeholders of the school have everything they need to reopen the school

The representatives of the Department of Education have shared the glimpses from the  meetings and the interactions. The  officials have shared that they were happy to support the school for their recovery effort.

DDG Hadebe said she was satisfied that everything was in order and that teaching and learning could take place at the school. “Our main aim for visiting the school today together with the District and the Implementing Agent was to ensure that our learners are able to return to a conducive environment come Monday,” she said.

The Department swiftly supplied the school with new mobile classrooms to assist the school in getting back on track. It is worth noting that these mobile classrooms are a temporary measure while the school is being rebuilt.
