Malawi: Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Liana Kakhobwe Chapota has called on Malawians to plant trees at all times. The politician believes that the practice will mitigate the effects of climate change.
The minister made the remarks during a tree planting exercise organised by the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) in Zomba. The event was hosted at one of the board’s water reservoirs, Mulunguzi Dam.
The ministry took the initiative during the tree planting season in Malawi. The officials are encouraging the people of the country to plant trees and help the country’s efforts in the fight against climate change.
The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, launched the country’s tree-planting season, also dubbed the Annual Forestry Season, at Mpasa Hill in Phalombe district.
The launch event was attended by several high-level officials of the country who expressed their solidarity with the administration’s efforts. The Annual Forestry season was instituted with the aim of ensuring that the people of the country form a habit of conserving and preserving the environment.
“We encourage companies, organisations and individuals to plant trees in their premises to fully restore the environment,” said the minister. Industrial waste is among the leading causes of the climate crisis.
Planting of trees is one of the many steps that the world is taking to combat the climate change crisis that they are facing. The Ministry of Water and Sanitation hosted the tree planting exercise in the company of several officials, board members and other stakeholders.
The Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) chairperson delivered brief remarks at the event.
In his remarks, chairperson Brown Mpinganjira, said the board plans to plant 100 thousand (100,00) trees during this year’s tree planting season in their water reservoirs.
The theme for this year’s tree planting exercise is: “Forest Innovation in Action Restoration for a Sustainable Tomorrow.”
