South Africa (Limpopo): The Limpopo Provincial government has commended Volleyball South Africa for staging the week-long Under-19 Volleyball Inter-Provincial Tournament in Seshego, Polokwane Municipality.
The tournament that commenced on Monday, 11 July 2022, at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Indoor Sport has seen athletes from seven provinces, including Mpumalanga, Gauteng, KZN, Free State, North-West and Eastern Cape, showcase skills and talents on the court.
The decision by Volleyball South Africa to host such a massive tournament in Limpopo, particularly when the national and international communities are commemorating Mandela Month. Sport is a unifying factor in the life of a people, and this tournament is proof that a nation can play and live together in harmony.
“The growth and interest that our province has demonstrated in volleyball are getting the recognition that we appreciate. We have welcomed the visitors from all other provinces and are confident that the Limpopo hospitality has allowed them to participate in the competition with joyful spirits,” said MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Thandi Moraka.
The U-19 South African teams, girls and boys, selected at the tournament will participate in the Region 5 Games in Zambia in December 2022.
The interest in volleyball in Limpopo has seen the Under-14 girls’ team win in their category at the recently held National School Sports Winter Championships in Cape Town, Western Cape. In the same competition, Limpopo Team Captain Olly Makhubele was voted girls’ best setter, while Florah Molefe was voted the best attacker.
The team of boys made Limpopo proud by winning a bronze medal. The Under-19 tournament is currently on until Friday, 15 July 2022.
