Zambia: The government of Zambia has initiated an emergency school feeding programme in Luampa district. The aim of organizing the feeding programme is to deal with the hunger crisis and food shortage situation in the country.
Zambia has been struggling with food shortage in several parts of the nation, which has left many families dependant on aid and donations for food. The administration has started several programmes to amplify this support
The programme was started with the motive to provide essential nutritious meals to pupils. Families who are facing significant challenges due to the effects of the drought are unable to provide adequate food for growing children.
The media reports have suggested that Acting District Commissioner, Michael Masinja was officiating at the launch of the initiative. He highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the impact of drought.
“The provision of food is critical to ensure effective delivery of education services to learners,” Mr. Masinja said.
Luampa District Education Board Secretary, Sandal Makumbu highlighted that the programme has played a vital role in promoting school attendance.
Makumbu revealed that many children have been forced to stay home due to the family’s struggle with hunger. Meanwhile, children were also forced to look for work to help their families make ends meet during the drought.
This is why, the students are not able to attend schools which administration believes is a dangerous trend. The future of the students is at a standstill, which prompted government to implement the feeding programme.
The Dean of Head Teachers, Catherine Kapawa highlighted her own views on the children‘s struggle. She agreed that the hunger crisis has severely impacted pupils’ academic performance and increased number of dropouts alarmingly.
Kapawa explained that learning is significantly hindered when children are unable to focus due to hunger.
She expressed optimism that the school feeding programme will not only alleviate immediate hunger but also enhance the pupil’s ability to learn and perform better academically, ultimately fostering a more conducive learning environment in the district.
