Malawi Defence Force soldiers based at Moyale Barracks have organized a Big Walk for Mzuzu University. The Army officials were joined by Malawi Police Services (MPS) and Malawi Prison Services (MPS).
The walk was hosted on Saturday was hosted with the aim of gathering the funds for the Malawi Armed Forces and Police Services. The officials have shared that the funds will help the war veterans that fought in the first and second World Wars.
The organization has shared that they are organizing several other events to support the raising of funds.
The leaders of the country have promised that they are dedicated to supporting the families who have given efforts towards the World Wars. The Commanding Officer for Moyale Barracks, Lieutenant Colonel, Herbert Lemani said that he was pleased with the support that the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS), Mzuzu City Council (MCC) and all well-wishers rendered during the event.
“The money which has been raised will help the families of fallen war heroes and those who are still alive. He said that they are grateful for the support that came from the Malawi Red Cross Society and MCC.
He said that it was with their support that the organization was able to raise the funds. He also acknowledged that the MDF soldiers based at Moyale Barracks could not manage on their own,” said Lemani.
The walk commenced from Mzuzu University to where Poppy Commemoration Day will take place tomorrow right at the heart of Mzuzu City.
Before the big walk, several activities took place including tag of war between MDF female officers and MPS and MPS female officers.
Poppy Day also known as Remembrance Day is observed every Sunday closest to November 11 and the theme for this year’s commemoration which will take place concurrently in Mzuzu, Zomba and Lilongwe is ‘Remembering and honoring our Heroes’ in Lilongwe, Zomba and Mzuzu.
The event is held in honor of veterans who fought in the first and second wars in 1914 to 1918 and 1938 to 1945 respectively.
