Malawi: The police force of Mzimba district has received reports of a suicide in the Chapamba Moyo village in Traditional Authority M’mbelwa. The victim has been identified as 20- year Trevor Mhone
The police officials of the region started investigating the incident after the family reached out to the police. A preliminary investigation into the matter revealed that the victim may be suffering from depression. The incident took place sometime between the late hours of Saturday and the early hours of Sunday.
According to the Mzimba Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Peter Botha, the victim says Mhone left home on Saturday, December 23, 2023 for beer. He was seen consuming alcohol within the Mzimba LEA School location and came back during the wee hours.
On returning from his escapade, the victim started shouting, claiming that he was not loved by the family members. Later he left for his house, which is few meters from his parents’ house.
At around 07:00 hours the victim’s father went to check on him only to find that he was hanging to the roof of his house lifeless.
The body of Mhone was taken to Mzimba District Hospital, where it was revealed that he died due to strangulation secondary to hanging. The police force has shared that the investigation into the incident has started. The investigating officials have not mentioned a suicide note being found in the victim’s home.
The officials have so far interviewed the family and friends of the deceased. Meanwhile, much detail about the incident is unavailable. The officials speculate that the victim may be struggling with mental health, low self-esteem or similar issues, leading to his suicide.
The people of the region have expressed their disappointment with the unfortunate accident. Some social media users offered their sympathies to the family of the diseased. Some others said that the family should have treated him with care and affection so as to prevent this unfortunate incident.
