A batch of 58 Fisheries Protection Officers were awarded Recognition Certificates for their dedication and commitment in the combat against illegal fishing by Sudheer Maudhoo- Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping on Wednesday.

The award ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping of Mauritius, at LIC Building, in Port-Louis. The Officers also received protective tools and equipment on that occasion.

The Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Sudheer Maudhoo, and the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry, Mubarakahmad Boodhun, were present.

In his address, Minister Maudhoo stated that the Fisheries Protection Department plays a key role in the combat against illegal fishing. He expressed gratitude to the personnel for their dedication and hard work in this fight and in protecting the rights of fishermen.

He cautioned about illegal fishing activities undertaken at sea and made an appeal to the Officers to remain vigilant at all times and identify any illegal transactions so as to curb down this issue.

The Minister further highlighted that Government will come up with more stringent laws to discourage illegal fishing. He reiterated Government’s support to the Fisheries Protection Service so that the Officers can perform their duties in the most efficient manner.

For his part, Mr Boodhun lauded the commitment of the Officers in conducting crackdown operations and combating illegal fishing while respecting social dimensions.
