Mauritius resident celebrates her 100th birthday in Camp Diable

Mauritius: Jaynool Jagessur, born on 27 November 1923, celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday at Anjuman Hall in Camp Diable.

An official ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity to honour the new centenarian. On this occasion, Mrs Jagessur received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 26,203; another one to the tune of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund; a gift in kind from the Senior Citizens Council; a bouquet; a centenarian medal; one certificate; a telephone; and a Digital Air Fryer.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, the Parliamentary Private Secretary, Dr Muhammad Ismaël Rawoo, and other personalities, as well as the close relatives of Mrs Jagessur, were present at the event.

Jaynool Jagessur, was born on the 27 November 1923 and resides at Karamuth Lane, Camp Diable. Her father, Mr Sookaroo Jagessur, was working as a boiler at Riche Bois Savannah Sugar Estate and her mother, Mrs Sakeena Sowdagur, was a housewife.

The centenarian got religiously married at the age of 19 to Ibrahim Jugon, who was an overseer at Riche Bois Savannah Sugar Estate, while she was working as a labourer at Riche Bois Savannah Sugar Estate. They have six children: four sons and two daughters. Two sons and two daughters are still alive. She has 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Mrs Jagessur is ambulant and has no major health problems, no diabetes and no hypertension but nevertheless suffers from hearing impairment. She attributes her longevity to her unconditional faith in God.

Latest statistics from the Welfare and Elderly Persons’ Protection Unit of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity reveal that the Republic of Mauritius has recorded, as of 28 November 2023, a total of 177 centenarians (151 females and 26 males) from Mauritius and Rodrigues.
