Cape Town: Residents of the Kensington area received title deeds from the Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis that confirmed their home ownership status on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis hosted a special breakfast to hand over the deeds title to beneficiary families as part of the ‘No Cost Transfer’ initiative of the City of Cape Town to enable cost-free home ownership for qualifying tenants of affordable rental apartments of the city.
As per Hill-Lewis, it is meaningful to join the Kensington residents at this special occasion to transfer title deeds to the families who are tenants of the City of Cape Town rental units and allow them to officially become the homeowners.

Thousands of beneficiaries will receive their title deeds in the next few months. This document is much more than a piece of paper for these families and future generations. It is a life-changing document which acts as both a home and a financial asset.
Councillor Carl Pophaim also gave his statement and said that they are on a mission to create homeowners. They have set the target of 11,000 and they are currently more than halfway with the renewed title deed programme.
They have already tracked down 6000 beneficiaries through the title deed programme and have 5000 more to go. These are typically difficult cases, where they do not have updated details for the beneficiaries or they are in another province.

According to Pophaim, if the resident is a beneficiary in the older city or government housing development, then do not have their title deed, they are encouraged to contact the city. The deed is making it possible for all to carry out banking transactions, create a will and testament, by also enabling property sales and other empowering benefits.
In the coming next few months, Capetonians will also see the new and improved Human Settlements bus going into communities, bringing services closer to the communities and taking the Title-Deed-to-Door programme, to the residents again.
