South Africa, Taung: The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, sent deepest sympathies to the two elderly women of the Manokwane village in Taung following their brutal murder last Thursday.
MEC Lehari condemns the brutal manner in which the two elderly and defenceless women died. The two, an eighty (80) year old Mmapulana Pauline Mmusi and fifty-nine (59) year old Merriam Kelebogile Mokgalagadi, went to a nearby bush to gather firewood.
Allegedly, the two gathered a heap of firewood in the vegetated area in between Manokwane, Matolong and Maphoitsile villages and took the first load home. It was as they went back to collect the second heap that they met their untimely death.
Their families became apprehensive when they did not return as dusk settled. Police were alerted and went to search the area, and it was then that their two lifeless bodies were found.
“What is further saddening is that it appears they were even raped before being brutally murdered, as per information from law enforcement”, said MEC Lehari.
Department of Community Safety and Transport Management delegation sent by MEC Lehari led by Acting Chief Director for Civilian Secretariat for Police, Ms Dikeledi Letsapa and Acting Director for Dr RSM District Coordination, Ms Ida Masilabele, visited the two bereaved families on Friday, 23rd of June 2023.
They were accompanied by the Taung Local Municipality Speaker, Cllr Keamogetse Moipolai and MMC for Community Safety, Cllr Mosetsangape Mosenkiemang and SAPS District Commissioner, Brigadier Tlotleng.
“We appeal to the communities to work with the police to ensure the culprits are apprehended. The investigation is underway, and anyone with any information, kindly share it with the police”, appealed MEC Lehari.
The deceased will be laid to rest today on, Saturday, 24 June 2023.
