Botswana: In anticipation of the upcoming 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence against Women and Children, the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture(MYSC), through the Gender Affairs Department, is orchestrating a series of impactful pre-launch activities.
Today marked a significant step, as a Kgotla meeting convened in Tsolamosese aimed to raise awareness about GBV while announcing that the commemoration will unfold on November 24th.
Mothei Sejakgomo, a speaker from the Botswana Institute for Reintegration and Rehabilitation (BIRRO), highlighted the alarming link between drug use and sexual violence against boys. Residents of Mogoditshane were urged to seek rehabilitation for their children through BIRRO’s services, offering temporary accommodation and support.
Constable Kebateng from the Botswana Police Service (BPS) addressed the prevalent issues of assault and rape in Tsolamosese, emphasizing the alarming frequency of new GBV cases reported.
In response, the BPS has established a dedicated Gender and Child Protection Branch in MOGODITSHANE to provide crucial support to victims of GBV. Villagers were encouraged to utilize these services and promptly report any form of abuse.
Closing the meeting, Village Councillor Hon Ditshuge urged residents to actively participate in the upcoming events, emphasizing the importance of attending and learning about GBV.
The collective effort is set to make a meaningful impact in fostering a safer and more informed community.
November 25th marks the International Day on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and kickstarts the celebration of the UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), held annually and dedicated to awareness creation, support and advocacy towards the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls worldwide.
This year’s 16 Days of Activism 2023 theme is “Respect Women !”.
