Malawi: Mzuzu Police force arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly breaking into Luwinga SANA Supermarket. The suspect has been identified as Iman Tayali. The suspect was accused of stealing a sum of K30 million from the supermarket
The Mzuzu Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Cecilia Mfune shared the details of the incident with the media. According to her, the suspect was arrested on May 11, 2025, at the Luwinga Sana supermarket within the city.
At the time of the arrest, the suspect was working at the supermarket. Mfune has confirmed that Tayali works as a supervisor and CCTV operator at Luwinga Sana supermarket.
On May 11, 2025, at approximately 19:30 hours the shop was closed for the day. Further, the money for weekend sales was kept in the back store and some at the counter to be banked on Monday.
The incident was reported to the police by the security guard working at the supermarket.
“The security guards on duty heard noises coming from the shop and alerted fellow guards, who immediately cordoned off the area and later saw the suspect on the roof with a sack and upon noticing the guards the suspect dropped the sack and began to run, but they managed to apprehend him and inform the police,” she narrated.
According to the Police Public Relations Officers, the detectives from the Luwinga Police Unit visited the scene of the crime. Furthermore, the Police discovered that the suspect had used a knife to cut through the iron sheets and ceiling. He entered the building and damaged the DRV CCTV and power DRV. The damages were worth approximately six million kwacha to destroy evidence.

Meanwhile, the stolen money worth K30 million has been recovered from the suspect. Further, the suspect will also soon appear before the court to answer charges of breaking into a building.
Tayali is a resident of the Mbalame Village, Traditional Authority(T/A) Mpama in Chiradzulu District.
