Mauritius: The medical and healthcare fraternity of Mauritius is celebrating the opening of a new Ophthalmological Surgery Unit (OSU). The unit will be operating from the SAJ Hospital in Flacq and cater to the needs of the community.
The people of the community, who are currently eye healthcare and treatments, have reason to rejoice at the new development. The officials have shared that the community has been looking forward to this development for several months.
This new facility will enhance the quality of healthcare and make ophthalmological treatment more accessible to patients. The people of the community can get access to the various facilities, including surgeries and other treatments.
In the past, the communities near the SAJ hospital have been forced to travel to other areas and regions to get access to these facilities. The officials have shared that the members of the community are delighted with this new development.
The officials have shared that the inauguration of the OSU was held on 17 January, Friday. The event was attended by several government officials including the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Kumar Bachoo.
The Minister of Health and Wellness delivered a brief address at the event and reflected on the importance of the new facility. The government of the country have been working hard to make sure that the people can access these facilities.
In his address, the Minister said that the objective of the Unit is to decentralise ophthalmological services and reduce waiting time for eye surgeries. He recalled that ophthalmological services are already available at the Eye Hospital in Moka and at Souillac Hospital.
The Minister of Health and Wellness has also reflected on the commitment of the Government to ensuring better healthcare facilities. He said that a team of specialists and surgeons from India will be in Mauritius shortly.
They have been contacted with the aim to perform cancer operations at the New Cancer Hospital. According to the government, 20,000 patients are currently undergoing cancer treatment in the country.
The nation records approximately 191 deaths related to cancer are registered annually.
