Nigeria: Philip Thomas, the editor of Report Afrique and prominent social media influencer, has shared some advice for Nigerian looking to travel abroad. The media personality, renowned as Comrade Phils believes that many people wanting to travel abroad have no plans.
They think once you land abroad, you will just start making money. That is why some of them land themselves in drug rings because they had no plans before leaving Nigeria.
Part of the things people need to do before even applying for your visas is read widely about the country and city they plan to travel to. Understand the cost of living there and the opportunities available for immigrants.
Philip Thomas asserted that getting work itself also depends on the type of visa you have. Accordingly, it is important to get the right information before stepping out.
Apart from just reading online, travellers can talk to people who live there and get a first hand overview of what to expect. Comrade Phils suggests, “Talk to as many people as possible, this way you can sieve all you hear and get the facts out of them.”
There is no free food abroad and Landlord will not wait for you to pay at the end of the year. Rent is paid monthly and even when you work, the government shares your pay in varying percentages with you. You can not jump tax. no be naija.
The media personality strongly reiterated that any month you do not pay your rent, you are automatically homeless.
In light of this, Philip Thomas said, “if you have no plans of how to survive outside Nigeria but have a roof and source of livelihood in Nigeria, stay put.” He urged the people of Nigeria to bear with the situation here until the travellers can figure out where they want to go and how they plan to survive there.
Thomas added that, it is better than going out there to become an emergency craze man and roam the streets of London, Toronto or Texas with no plans.
The media personality asserted that if people do not have the right plan, they will regret, especially if their age is not on their side.
Finally, even with all the issues we have, the day our leaders get it right, you will know that there is no truer fact in the world than the words “there is no place like home.”
