Malawi: The World Food Programme (WFP) launched a three-year Home-Grown School Feeding Program. The programme was launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Nkhotakota District.

The launch of the Feeding Programme was hosted at Nkhotakota LEA primary school on Tuesday. The WFP’s Acting Country Director, Simon Dehnere, delivered a brief address at the launch event.
He said the project aims at ensuring that primary school learners have nutritious and diversified diets throughout the academic year.
According to the Acting Country Director of the WFP, the aim of the feeding programme has been done to create opportunities for farmers surrounding the schools.
The programme also seeks to promote sustainable practices by using locally grown food and clean energy solutions. The farmers who will participate in the programme will be able to benefit monetarily and also get exposure.
Head of Mission for the Embassy of Iceland, David Bjarnason was also present at the launch event for the feeding programme for students.
He said his government will continue supporting the education sector in the country adding that the program will motivate the learners to stay in school whilst improving their nutritional status.
Speaking at the same function, Deputy Director for School Health, Nutrition, HIV and AIDS in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Maureen Maguza Tembo commended government of Iceland for supporting the program saying it will improve quality education in the district.
Chairperson of the. Nkhotakota District Council, Councilor Charles Chimzukuzuku has shared that they needed the programme. The councilor also appreciated Iceland embassy for their commitment in the development of basic services in the district.
The program is being implemented under a total budget of MK3 billion. According to the stakeholders who are involved in the implementation of the programme, the programme will help 10 primary schools.
The list also includes the name of Nkhotakota LEA – a facility dedicated for learners with special needs in the district.
