Zambia: Cholera patients are running away from the treatment centre in Lusaka. The patients are not completing their treatment before leaving the treatment centres.
In many cases, the patients do not inform the doctors and other authorities before leaving the treatment centre. The actions of the officers can lead to dire consequences for the patients as their sickness can potentially get worse in the absence of proper care.
In many cases, the patients go back to their homes and localities, where the infection started, and continue to indulge in the same routines as before. Exposure to contaminated food and water can lead to extreme health-related issues.
The authorities have urged the people of the country to continue to remain cautious and practice all the precautions laid out by the government to fight against cholera. Lusaka has been recording the highest number of active and cumulative cases of cholera in Zambia.
The fact that patients are escaped from treatment centers in Lusaka without any certification or completing their treatment is a matter of concern for the authorities.
The situation came to light during an Epidemic Meeting in Mazabuka on Tuesday morning. According to the stakeholders present at the meeting, 3 out of 21 cases recorded in the district are patients who escaped Cholera Centers in Lusaka.
Mazabuka District Health Public Health Officer, Miranda Kazembe, explained that the three patients were earlier admitted in Lusaka. They were receiving treatment for the infection in the treatment centres before they left without completing the designated course
Meanwhile, Mazabuka District Commissioner, Oliver Mulomba, has called for tight security at Cholera centers.
He stated that the district will ensure that no one escapes from the Cholera centre, stressing the need for guarding the patients in order to ensure that no one leaves without certification from Health Personnel.
Mazabuka has so far recorded 21 cumulative cases, with 14 being active. The administration of the country has been actively involved in making sure that the situation can be curbed and contained.
