Dominica: Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit addressed the nation through a press conference on Monday, May 26, 2025, held at the Ministry of Finance Conference Room around 10:30 am.
PM Skerrit began his address with an introduction and summarized major issues in his brief at the conference. He discussed mainly about the upcoming Hurricane Season and his safety preparedness, along with Haiti crisis and about recent agricultural and medical facilities provided. He also talked about extended direct flights and new additions to the infrastructure of the nation. In continuation, he discouraged the entry of illegal firearms in Dominica.
He denied his support in increasing firearm issues, considering the increase in crime rates increasing in Dominica. He emphasized that the betrayal of firearms in the nation by goons or gangs has been practiced here for many years which is against the laws. And following this matter the culprits have to face the consequences.
Undoubtedly, they have to deal with harassment by the law, if this doesn’t stop immediately. PM Skerrit also mentioned that they are taking noticeable measures to curb this growing issue, in order to remove this completely from the nature isle of the Caribbean.
The Prime Minister of Dominica has given a stern warning to illegal firearm holders and noted that the federation is being strict about removing the presence of illegal firearms on the island.
He confirmed this decision by addressing a press conference that was held at the Ministry of Finance Conference Room on Monday morning.
Skerrit stated that in respect to illegal firearms, he is making clear and warning everybody in Dominica that whosoever is possessing the illegal firearm, the government is very serious about the presence of illegal firearms.
He added that the illegal firearms are the most dangerous thing which is a global challenge because the majority of homicides happening in Dominica are due to illegal firearms.
Prime Minister Skerrit confirmed that his government is working with the United States to address, reach and target the source of these firearms, but in Dominica they have to address the handling of the firearms, to tackle this issue.
