South Africa: The Reaction Unit South Africa have recently arrested a suspect who was sought for a number of robberies in the Verulam CBD – KZN. The suspect was arrested on Wednesday afternoon. Further, the Reaction Unit officers also recovered a firearm.
The arrest made in Canelands – KZN and shared that the members of the community had spotted the suspect on station road in the Canelands neighbourhood of Verulam. The officials have shared that they started further investigation into the matter.
The officials confirmed that the 24 year old man possessed a firearm. The firearm had been stolen from a pedestrian during a robbery on George Sewpersad Street on Tuesday.
The officials have also confirmed that a team was dispatched to the place where the witnesses had seen the suspect. The suspect, at this point was cornered at his hideout. The officials shared that the firearm was identified as a 9mm CZ75 pistol.
The firearm had five rounds of ammunition. Further, the Reaction Officers said that the members of the community have shared the details of the robbery the suspect was wanted for.
The officials said that the complainant from the robbery and acquired the serial number of his firearm. Later, the officials confirmed that the pistol belonged to him.
He also stated that the magazine of the a 9mm CZ75 pistol contained fifteen rounds of ammunition. There was one round in the chamber when he was deprived of the weapon.
The suspect could not account for the missing eleven rounds of ammunition that were supposed to be . It was also confirmed that the suspect was a member of gang that terrorised patrons in the Central Business District.
One of the victims of the robbery was a Policeman. The male informed Officers that he operated with three (3) other individuals. The officials have shared that the suspect’s gang targeted their victims for their cellphones .
They later sold the phones for R500 to random individuals in the taxi and bus rank. They would use the proceeds of the sale to purchase drugs.
The South Africa Police Service have arrested the suspect in Verulam KZN .
