SENA, MFDC launches film competition for Special Needs students

Mauritius: The Special Education Needs Authority (SENA) launched a seven-minute Film Competition themed ‘Us Too’. They have organized the competition in collaboration with the Mauritius Film Development Cooperation (MFDC).

The other partners helping in thee execution of the event is the advertising agency Grey. The competition was meant for the students of Special Education Needs (SEN) schools across the island.

The organizations also came together to create a video-clip on autism. The video created in a joint initiative by the SENA and Grey was also aired at the launch of the competition on Thursday.

The government of Mauritius has shared that the programme was attended by several government officials. The list of guests included:

The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Tertiary Education, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun

The Director of the SENA, Deewakarsingh Authelsingh

The General Manager of the MFDC, Sachin Jootun

The Vice Prime Minister of Mauritius delivered a brief address at the event. She welcomed the organisation of an inaugural film competition for students with special needs.

Talking about the competition. The Vice Prime Minister said, “The endeavour was in line with Government’s reform on education based on quality, equity and inclusion.” She then talked about the various measures taken by the Ministry under her charge.

She highlighted that these were geared towards the holistic and integral development of the Mauritian child.

According to VPM Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, the role of the authorities was to provide adequate support to all children, irrespective of their skills, strengths and weaknesses, so that they achieve their full potential.

She underlined that the legislative framework concerning the SENA were aligned with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

On the other hand, Vice-Prime Minister praised the producers of the autism clip in her address. She highlighted the clip for its educational value with a view to foster greater inclusion and understanding.

She also saluted the SENA for holding winter school holidays’ activities. She revealed that, since the start of the school holidays, some 1,200 children from SEN schools, accompanied by their parents, were able to watch an animated movie at the cinema free of cost.
