South African Singer Tyla beats Burna Boy and Davido, wins GRAMMY 2024 for the category ‘Best African Music Performance’.
Tyla has won her first-ever Grammy Award. The golden Grammy trophy was presented to 22-year-old singer Jimmy Jam during the Grammy’s Premiere Ceremony.
The singer expressed on stage, “What the heck? This is crazy, I never thought I’d say I won a GRAMMY at 22 years old.
The South African starlet came ahead of ASAKE & Olamide (Amapiano); Burna Boy (City Boys Miracle); Davido ft Musa Keys (Unavailable) and Arya Starr (Rush).
Tyla won against stiff competition that included massive Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Davido.
Tyla won due to the massive appeal of her hit song ‘Water’, which proved to be undeniable for GRAMMY voters. The amapiano pop song made it to the Billboard Hot 100 charts last year in 2023. She is the first South African solo artist since Hugh Masekala won in 1968.
The song later peaked at no. 07, making the artist the highest -charting frican female solo musician in Billboard history. The song then went on no. 01 on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs and Hip-Hop/ R&B charts.
Tyla mentioned her family while receiving the award. She said in her acceptance speech, “I know my mother’s crying somewhere in here.”
Afro-singer Tyla made history as the first-ever Best African Music Performance winner. “The category was created in order for the Academy to honor music from the continent,” said Academy President Harvey Mason Jr.
Mason expressed, “I’d love to see us be able to honor even more music from Africa and other areas of the world.”
He added to his words, “The future of the Recording Academy is going to build on equity. We’re not just honoring music breaking in our country we’re celebrating music from around the world.”
