St. Kitts and Nevis hosted the third forum on Human Rights Defenders in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean. It was a high-level event that took place this week on Tuesday, April 08, 2025.
At the forum Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew highlighted its significance and said that it is being held for the first time in the insular Caribbean. It is a specific region that is disproportionately impacted by the devastating effects of the climate crisis. Considering this, he stated that the event has represented more than a meeting of minds, instead it is a meeting of purpose.
PM Drew emphasized the unwavering commitment of the nation towards environmental justice and the protection of human rights defenders. He said that it is a powerful signal that the struggle for environmental justice and the defense of human rights know no borders and that the small islands with proud histories and resilient people have a meaningful role to play on the global stage.
During the event, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the St. Kitts and Nevis towards the Escazú Agreement. It is a forum that stands as a leading regional platform focused majorly on the ones who have dedicated their lives to defending both human rights and the environment. It has emphasized its role as a beacon of transparency, inclusion and justice.
PM Drew further stressed upon the continuous environmental degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss that are not abstract concepts but lived realities for communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister added that the communities are on the front lines. The homes are vulnerable, the ecosystems, once thriving, now struggle under the weight of pollution and exploitation. He stated that yet considering all these challenges, there is hope, a hope that lies in the courage and determination of the environmental defenders.
Those people often work in silence and too often at great personal risk stand as the first line of defense between the natural world and those who would exploit it for short-term gain.
Following the St. Kitts and Nevis’ own experiences and its Sustainable Island State (SIS) Agenda, PM Drew affirmed the belief of the nation that environmental protection is inseparable from development.
He also said that the preservation of the rivers and reefs, the protection of the mangroves and marine life, are not just environmental objectives. It is their national priority and human rights issues at their core.
The event held recently brought together the regional governments, civil society organizations and other key stakeholders for a vital dialogue on safeguarding the rights and work of environmental defenders.
Key figures delivered the remarks at the official opening ceremony that included the Minister of the Environment in Uruguay – Dr. Marcelo Cousillas who also served as Chair of the Presiding Officers of the Escazú Agreement.
Additionally, the Minister of Environment and Climate Action – Dr. Joyelle Clarke also participated in a panel discussion that centered on ‘Women’s Political Leadership for Environmental Protection’. The session highlighted the essential role of women in advancing environmental protection through leadership and political action.
