Botswana: Minister of Health in the government of Botswana Dr Stephen Modise has met with the doctors of the nation on Saturday. The meeting which was hosted in Gaborone sought to bring the Minster in touch with the Botswana Doctors Union.
The Minister spoke to the union representatives at the Botswana Doctors Union Annual General Meeting. Dr Modise said he is aware that the Doctors, especially those in the public health system have many issues they wish to have resolved.
The doctors have claimed that some of these issues have been hindering their capacity to serve their nation to the best of its capacity. Such issues include those relating to their welfare and professional development.
Dr Modise assured Doctors that the new Government is constantly working for the overall development of the nation. The administration believes in a functional health system that is accessible to all people.
The Minister of Health said that the people should be able to get healthcare facilities regardless of their standing in life. In line with this mandate, government will be introducing a health insurance to help people access quality health care services.
Minster Dr Stephen Modise informed them about new developments in the public health sector like the decision to transfer the primary health care function from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs.
Minister Dr Modise also assured Doctors that he was aware of their position regarding Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital. He further clarified that the Government is committed to ensuring that the hospital becomes a true teaching hospital that benefits health care students and serves the public satisfactorily.
The Minister was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary Professor. Oatlhokwa Nkomazana. The doctors who were in attendance at the event were given the chance to interact with the Minster and learn about his ministry’s plans for the future of the country.
