Tanzania’s first ever locally assembled aircraft took its first flight. The Skyleader-600 landed at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. Three aircraft of this have been assembled already.
Reportedly, the announcement was made by the Director of Airplanes Africa Limited (AAL) – David Grolig.
A Morogoro-based company, AAL received the certification from the relevant authorities to commence operations, after successfully meeting the international aviation standards. Grolig praised the quality and modern design of the Skyleader-600 and noted that the aircraft are available to purchase now.
The AAL Director said, “We have produced three Skyleader-600 aeroplanes in Tanzania and they are fully ready for the market. These aircraft are an ideal means of transport for Tanzania and for whole Africa at large scale. We welcome the interested customers who want to purchase these aircrafts and become their proud owners.”
He expressed that the idea to establish and develop an ultralight aircraft manufacturing facility in Tanzania was very much influenced by the conducive investment climate of the country and it was the willingness of Tanzanians to embrace the new technologies and skills.
Skyleader-600 is designed to carry two passengers that consists of the pilot and the business traveler. It is particularly built to suit business travelers, to support them for long journeys. “We conducted an in-depth research focusing on the needs of frequent business travelers. Notably the ones who require efficient long-distance transport,” he said.
“And, this aircraft will fulfill that desire, encouraging them to attend meetings in different regions and return to the city promptly for important engagements,” explained Grolig.
AAL is the foremost company in Tanzania to manufacture such aircraft, which can be used for both commercial and personal use. The company has collaborated with a mixed team of Tanzanian and Czech professionals. It offers employment opportunities to local youth and to some of those who were selected for internships in the Czech Republic.
Grolig stressed that owning an ultralight aircraft is just like owning a car. As the aircraft run on petrol and require low maintenance cost. It is more economical than traditional general aviation aeroplanes.
Considering this AAL Director added, “The success of this project is a result of the close collaboration and strong bond between Tanzania and Czech teams.”
Aircraft Skyleader-600 planes were exhibited at the ongoing Tanzania International Manufacturers Expo (TIMEXPO 2024) which was held at the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF). The event was organised by the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) in association with the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade). The exhibition attracted more than 300 local and international companies.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport – Prof. Godius Kahyarara lauded the achievement and stated that Tanzania is now the only African country who manufactures such aircraft. He also mentioned that the Skyleader-600 is capable of flying for six hours non-stop.
It demonstrated the potential for long-distance travel. Also, this development positions Tanzania as a rising player in the aerospace manufacturing industry and adds it up to a regional hub for innovative transportation solutions.
