Malawi: Nkhata Bay District Council launched a MK249 million Thotho Health Post construction project. The health post is being constructed in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Khoza in the district. The initiative is directly funded from the Governance of Zambia to Enable Service Delivery (GESD).
The launch of the event was hosted on Friday and attended by many government officials and media practitioners. The construction of the health post will help the organization give the people of the community access to better health facilities.
Member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay Central Constituency, Symon Vuwa Kaunda was also at the launch event. He appreciated the government for the project saying the initiative will improve access to health care services in the area.
“A population of 15, 000 people will be relieved from travelling for over three hours through the lake to Nkhata Bay District Hospital to access health services. We are really grateful to government for this,” said Kaunda.
Acting Director of Public Works for Nkhata Bay District Council, George Gopani said that the project is a clear indication of the council’s commitment towards improving health service delivery in the district.
“This project has been awarded to Duduzile Building Contractors and is expected to be completed within 120 days,” said Gopani.
He said that Thotho is one of the hard to reach areas in this district and we will continue bringing such basic social amenities to such areas.
He therefore warned the contractor to avoid shoddy works saying the council and community members will intensively be monitoring the project for the contractor to deliver a quality for value structure.
TA Khoza said that the health facility will greatly help expectant women who struggle travelling long distances to access maternal health services.
“We will provide all the support to the contractor up to the end of the project and make sure that the work is done within the agreed guidelines,” said Thotho.
Manager for Duduzile Building Contractors, Fallece Nyirenda said that he was optimistic that the project will be completed within the stipulated period.
