Cape Town: Ireland based South African animation studio Triggerfish bagged the international Annie Awards for the category ‘Best Limited Series’ in TV or Media for Annies ceremony in Los Angeles, last week.
The receiving of the honour at the Annie Awards marks a significant triumph for African animation in the highly competitive motion picture industry and especially in South Africa.
Considering the achievements, Triggerfish executive producer Anthony Silverston said that the “affirming acknowledgement from the global awards marks a significant milestone for all Triggerfish and the African animation industry too.”
“It also highlights the growing recognition and appreciation for fresh storytelling and authentic representation of African narratives in animation,” said Anthony Silverston.
Winning another award for ground breaking Disney+ Original Series ‘Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire’ remarks another achievement to the Kidscreen Award for ‘Best Animated Series’ for Tweens or Teens in San Diago, earlier this month.
Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire is an action packed animated sci-fi series that presents the futuristic vision from Africa inspired by the diverse history and culture of the continent. The movie has enchanted audiences on a global level since it was released in July 2023, with its compelling narrative, vibrant imagery and original characters.
Adding up to its accolades, Triggerfish has also won a ‘Generation Fire’ award for ‘Best Music’ category for TV or Media at the ceremony for song made for its short film ‘Aau’.
The song represents an inspiring journey of fantasy Star Wars of a child finding her destiny. It was originally created for the Star Wars: Visions Volume-02 anthology series directed by South African Directors Nadia Darries and Daniel Clarke.
Song from the ‘Aau’ movie has also been nominated for a Prix Jeunesse International Award. The whole series has also won the Lumiere Award for the ‘Best Episodic – Animated’.
Triggerfish’s original ‘Supa Team 4’ on Netflix is nominated for ‘Best International Series’ at the British Animation Awards in March. The ‘Supa Team 4’ is a movie inspired by the creator Malenga Mulendema.
