A Cyclist from Livingstone has died after being hit by a Howo Truck along Nakatindi Road near the SDA Church.

Zambia: A Cyclist from Livingstone has died after being hit by a Howo Truck along Nakatindi Road near the SDA Church. The incident occurred on 5th February 2024 around 17:06 hours. The local police authorities have been alerted of the incident.

The victim of the incident has been identified as 27-year-old James Mulele. He was a resident of the Katubia Resettlement in Chief Sekute’s Area.

The fatality happened when the truck being driven by 38-year-old Alfred Makalicha of Bwana Mukubwa Area in Ndola failed to keep to his near side lane. The vehicle ended up hitting the cyclist who was travelling in the same direction.

The victim, who was cycling a west-bound Jents at the time of the incident, sustained serious head injuries from the accident. He was taken to the Livingstone Central Teaching Hospital for treatment by some persons of goodwill.

The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Livingstone Central Teaching Hospital. Meanwhile, The driver of the truck sustained some injuries due to the incident.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited in Batoka Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem. The Livingstone Police Force is expected to start an investigation into the matter and arrest the truck driver.

The incident has left the local authorities of the district in a state of worry for the road users of the region. The road traffic accidents are one of the most common cause of serious injuries and death among youngsters.

Reports suggest that the number of road traffic accidents has seen a steep rise in recent months. Accordingly, the authorities have been urging local drivers and motorists to remain cautious and follow the rules.
