VPM Dookun-Luchoomun launches art exhibition

Mauritius: An Art Exhibition showcasing the best artworks of School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) students opened this morning, in the presence of the Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Leela Devi Dookhun-Luchoomun, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Moka.

Mauritius: An Art Exhibition showcasing the best artworks of School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) students opened this morning, in the presence of the Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Leela Devi Dookhun-Luchoomun, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Moka.

The Director of the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES), D. S. Thanacoody Soborun, was present. Students excelling at A Level and O Level in the subject of Arts and Design were also rewarded on this occasion.

The Art Exhibition, organised by the MES, will be open to the public from 19 June 2023 till 24 June 2023 from 09 00 hrs to 15 30 hrs at the MGI.

In her address, VPM Dookhun underlined that Arts and Design had become a popular subject among students adding that the pass rate for SC examinations is 99%. The subject, she observed, stimulates aesthetic awareness, personal independence and creativity.

She added that it is often challenging for educators to tap into the right talents and aptitudes of students, which requires perseverance, patience and hard work.

Speaking of technology as a huge enabler in students’ lives, she urged that all prized artworks be digitalised and uploaded online. Digital gallery, she remarked, is becoming a popular reality. We must remain connected and open wider portals for creative artworks to serve as a model for discovery and education.

The VPM commended the students for successfully translating their vision and creativity in their artworks, adding that this has helped enhance their knowledge of cultures and traditions.

For her part, Thanacoody Soborun indicated that 67 artworks are being displayed for this exhibition and include diverse art techniques of 45 students. 

She lauded the quality and standard of students’ works, adding that they have displayed exemplary artistic skills and talents for creating their artworks.

She also spoke of changes brought in the syllabus to address the needs of Mauritian students and further promote their skills in the field of Arts and Design.
