South Africa: The World Rugby U20 Championship concludes today on July 19, 2024 at DHL Stadium and Athlone Stadium. The tournament was supported by the City of Cape Town and has featured total 24 games over the last three weeks.
Reportedly, the six games included a blockbuster final between defending champions France and England, which are on the cards at Cape Town’s iconic stadiums.
The ‘Junior Springboks’ U20 Rugby team of South Africa will get the action rolling at DHL Stadium in a 7th place playoff game against Wales from 2:00 p.m.
As per the sources, Ireland and New Zealand will battle it out for the third and fourth place seeding at the same venue at 4:30 p.m. The championship game between France and England will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
At Athlone Stadium, Spain and Fiji will be duelling for 11th place from 12:00 p.m. which will be followed by the 9th place decider between Italy and Georgia at 2:30 p.m.
Australia and Argentina will close out the action at Athlone Stadium with the 5th 0r 6th place playoff game at 5:00 p.m.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that The World Rugby U20 Championship has been a wonderful showcase of some of the top prospects of the game. It was a testament of Cape Town’s ability to successfully host the major events while also promoting the city to a global audience.
“It’s been an honour to host the players, officials and the travelling supporters. There are still six games to play and we would surely like to encourage Capetonians to come out and support not only the Junior Springboks but also the future of world rugby,” said Smith.
The 2024 World Rugby U20 Championship was the 14th edition of the premier age-grade ruby union competition. The tournament was hosted in South Africa for the third time.
The Rugby Tournament began on June 29, 2024 and culminated on July 19, 2024. The five days match was played over in the Western Cape regions of Stellenbosch and Cape Town. The championship featured the best-12 U20 nations in the world, competing for the world title.
