Zambia: The Deputy Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander and Chief of Air Staff, Maj Gen Oscar Nyoni, has declared the 2023 Air Force Commander’s Netball Tournament officially open after three years of absence. The tournament was suspended following the Covid 19 pandemic.
This year’s two day tournament is being held at the Olympic Youth Development Center (OYDC) under the theme, ‘Promoting Inclusivity Through Sports’.
The Deputy ZAF Commander and Chief of Air Staff paid tribute to the President of the Republic of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, for the pronouncement that there are no minor sports and that all sporting disciplines must be given equal and fair financial support.
Maj Gen Nyoni pledged ZAF’s continued support to all sports, saying that sports were a source of revenue for many youths in the country.
He also commended the organisers and supporting partners for the Air Force Commander’s tournament for promoting netball in the country. He acknowledged that the success of the tournament was due to the concerted efforts and support from partners such as Manzi Valley, Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and the Midlands Netball Association, among others.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Training, Brig Gen Kamima Nyirenda, asserted that the tournament provides a platform for personnel to interact with other organisations and exchange social and professional values that spur economic growth, personal health and wellness.
On behalf of the Midlands Netball Association, the Chairperson, Felix Mkandawire, acknowledged ZAF Command for sponsoring the 3rd edition of the Air Force Commander’s Netball Tournament.
“I take this earnest appeal to the Zambia Air Force Commander and his management staff to continue supporting the game as this is one way kicking out diseases, abuse of drugs and other bad vices among the youths,” said Felix Mkandawire.
