Zambia: Chadiza man stabs friend over woman

Zambia: Twenty-seven-year-old Samson Mwale from Chadiza district stabbed his friend Jeff Phiri, who was also the same age as him, on Friday, October 27, 2023. The suspect recently appeared before the court to present his defence of the incident.

The suspect and the victim were friends and were hanging out together at a bar. The two friends were having an alcoholic beverage when they noticed a lady they both liked.

Mwale and Phiri entered into an argument about the said woman, which escalated and turned dangerous for one of them. The two men made advances to approach and attract the lady. They both brought beer for the woman to further their cause.

Meanwhile, the woman showed no interest in either of the men. The friends began to fight over the lady whose name and identity are not known.

While the woman did not accept their advances, this did not deter them from their argument. During the tussle, Samson overpowered Jeff, beat him up and stabbed him with a knife. Meanwhile, he warned the victim to stay away from the lady.

The police force took immediate action and arrested the suspect. Samson pleaded not guilty of the assault, and the matter was taken to court. Magistrate Munsaka has since adjourned the case for continued trial to November 21, 2023.

The suspect from Chadiza district will be presented to the court for the first time today (Tuesday, November 21, 2023)

In a similar incident that occurred only days before, the Magistrate Court sentenced a 27 years old man to nine months simple imprisonment. In this case, the suspect was Lameck Zulu. He and his accomplice, Elijah Tembo, assaulted Dickson Kanyama, 28, after the victim refused to buy them beer.

The magistrate delivered the judgement after Lameck Zulu admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. On the other hand, Tembo, who pleaded not guilty, was still in custody as the court awaited more evidence for judgement.
