Zambia: The roof of a female shower block at Kanyama Boarding Secondary School in Mwinilunga District of Northwestern Province blew off following heavy rains in the area.
The officials of the Mwinilunga District visited the boarding school to get accurate details of the incident. Mwinilunga District Administrative Officer, Pius Pulina was one of the officials who visited the school.
He provided an update about the situation at the institution and revealed some details about the incident. According to him, the roof of the school blew off on Wednesday, December 6, at 4:00 PM.
Some electrical fittings of the building were also damaged due to the weather conditions in the district. He said it is important that the shower block is quickly rehabilitated so that it does not affect learning once schools reopen for the first term next year. Â
Meanwhile, Kanyama Boarding Secondary School teacher, Henry Chola noted that the 90 students who uses the facility will be negatively affected should the facility not be worked on by the time schools open. Â
He also added that the extra shower block remaining at the female hostels will be inadequate to cater for all the female students in the school. Â
The Teachers since appealed to relevant authorities in the district to urgently attend to the damaged facility.
“This situation needs quick interventions. The reason we came to check on the damage and see what is needed,” said District Administrative Officer Pius Pulina.
The site was also visited by other officials from the district including:
- A team of officers from the District Education Board Secretary’s (DEBS) office
- The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).
After the officials assessed the damage that the heavy rain and winds have caused, they wrote a bill of quantities (BOQ). The authorities have announced that they will start their work on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the shower blocks before the new session begins.
